Home Remedies for Cancer Treatment Side Effects

Cancer treatment affects every part of daily life, not just the body, but also appetite, energy, and emotional balance. Many women seek small, home-based ways to feel a little more at ease. While home remedies and complementary practices can help manage side effects, always consult your oncology team before trying anything new. Even natural remedies can sometimes interfere with treatment.

Nausea and Vomiting

Nausea can be exhausting. Eating small, frequent meals instead of large portions is gentler on the stomach. Simple foods like crackers, plain rice, curd, toast, bananas, or soups are usually easier to tolerate. Cold or room-temperature foods may also help reduce nausea.

Sipping fluids throughout the day is important. Water, clear broths, coconut water, or diluted fruit juices help prevent dehydration. Many women find ginger helpful. Ginger tea, chews, or a small amount of fresh ginger may ease discomfort. In fact, a study published in PMC found that ginger supplementation at 0.5–1 g per day significantly reduced chemotherapy-induced nausea when used alongside standard anti-nausea care in adult cancer patients.

Strong smells and greasy or spicy foods can worsen nausea. Calm breathing, listening to music, or guided relaxation can also help. Some women find relief using acupressure on the inner wrist point, often with acupressure bands.

Fatigue

Moving, including short walks or gentle stretching, can help in the long run, but only with the permission of your doctor. Rest is equally important. Rest and sleep when necessary, and do not work when you are tired, and the body will heal.

Foods that are rich in proteins and hydrating aid in strength. Sleep and fatigue can also be reduced by using meditation, journaling, or discussing with a person you trust to help you manage stress.

Mouth Sores and Dry Mouth

Eating may cause discomfort due to mouth sores and dryness. Irritation may be treated by rinsing the mouth with salt water. Foods such as khichdi, oats, soups, mashed vegetables, or curd are soft and easier to consume. Honey has been demonstrated to be helpful in alleviating mouth sores, and by rinsing or swallowing water, the mouth remains moist. No alcohol, caffeine, and really spicy or acidic food during this period.

Neuropathy or Nerve Discomfort

Numbness or tingling in the hands and feet can be unsettling. Keeping extremities warm, avoiding cold exposure, and gentle massage may help. Wearing cushioned footwear and using simple tools for daily tasks can prevent strain and injury.

A Gentle Reminder

Always discuss home remedies, supplements, or lifestyle changes with your cancer care team. Small, thoughtful choices made with medical guidance can provide comfort and support as you navigate treatment, one day at a time.
