Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT)

Facing cancer is hard, and the idea of surgery makes it even more stressful. But Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) has caught doctors’ attention in recent years. LITT is a minimally invasive, image-guided neurosurgical procedure that is used to destroy brain tumors and radiation necrosis with absolute precision. Because it is minimally invasive, it is more gentle and less painful than other procedures.

How does LITT work?

In traditional treatments, doctors often use the invasive approach, which can result in bleeding and pain after the surgery. But in the minimalistic approach of LITT, surgeons insert a thin laser probe through a small incision. They guide it precisely to your tumor’s location via real-time imaging. Once it is placed, a controlled heat is delivered through that laser to destroy cancerous cells. This way, it spares the surrounding healthy tissues, so you experience less pain. Because of its accuracy and precision, it is recommended for surgeries of brain tumors and radiation necrosis, where tumors are recurrent, or if you are unfit for an open surgery.

Benefits of LITT

Surgery makes us question our lives after treatment. But LITT treats your tumor so precisely that it can reduce any physical load on your body. The following are a few benefits of adopting LITT:

  • LITT only requires a small incision during surgery.
  • The hospitalization time here is less than for other surgeries.
  • You can heal and return to your normal routine much faster.
  • Less damage because of less impact on surrounding tissues.

Limitations to consider

LITT offers a lot of advantages, so you can heal with less pain. But it also comes with its limitations and is not suitable for every cancer surgery.

  • Temporary swelling may occur in the treated area that needs monitoring.
  • Not suitable for all tumor types, as the sizes and locations of your tumor may vary.
  • The LITT is only carried out under expert guidance and in dedicated centers.

Recovery after LITT

Your recovery after LITT is much faster than other surgery approaches. However, how your recovery goes totally depends on your stage and overall health. MRI scans and follow-up care will still be required for close monitoring so you can stay on track. The aim here is to stay updated so you can detect any unexpected changes early and make your next informed decision with confidence.

Moving towards precise care

Cancer surgery can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already on multiple treatments. Feeling anxious is normal. LITT offers a precise, minimally invasive option that’s gentler on your body. With careful follow-up and monitoring, you can recover more comfortably and get back to your daily life with confidence.
