When a child is being treated for Cancer, parents usually expect hospital visits, medicines, tiredness, and physical side effects. But many parents later say something else caught them off guard—the mood changes and eating changes after steroids started. A calm child may suddenly become angry quickly. A child who normally eats small meals may suddenly keep asking for food all day. Some children cry more easily, and some stop sleeping properly. Some become unusually restless. For parents, these sudden changes can feel shocking
Why steroids
Doctors sometimes use steroids like dexamethasone or prednisone during treatment, especially in certain childhood blood cancers. These medicines may help treatment work better and are also used to help with inflammation, nausea, and other treatment-related problems.
Mood changes can happen fast
Some parents say their child suddenly did not feel like themselves for a few days or weeks. Small things may suddenly lead to anger or tears. Some children become emotionally sensitive. Others become hyperactive, restless, or unusually stubborn. Sleep problems can also make these mood changes feel stronger. For families already dealing with cancer treatment, this part can feel emotionally exhausting.
Sudden hunger
Some children suddenly feel hungry almost all the time during steroid treatment. They may finish a meal and ask for more food again shortly after. Cravings can also become stronger. Parents sometimes feel confused because eating habits change so suddenly. Steroids can make children feel hungry much more often than usual.
Weight gain and face swelling
Some parents notice puffiness around the face during steroid treatment.
Others notice sudden weight gain even if food habits do not look drastically different. A lot of parents get worried seeing these body changes suddenly, especially the face puffiness.
Sleep can become difficult
Some children struggle to sleep while taking steroids.
They stay awake late, wake up repeatedly, or seem full of energy at unusual hours. When sleep gets disturbed, emotions can become harder to manage, too.
One thing worth knowing
Later, some parents talk more about the emotional part of steroids than the physical part. Not because the medicines were unnecessary. But because watching their child suddenly change emotionally can feel very hard. Sometimes parents feel confused because their child suddenly becomes angry, emotional, or difficult to manage. In many cases, the medicines are playing a role in those changes too. For many children, these side effects slowly improve once steroid doses are reduced or treatment changes.
