Chemotherapy has always been a conventional and widely trusted approach to cancer treatment. Sometimes, it causes stress on both the mind and body. But what if there is a complementary way to enhance patients’ immune systems to fight cancerous cells? That’s where immunotherapy cancer treatment comes into the picture.
Instead of directly attacking cancer cells like chemotherapy, it unleashes the patient’s immune system, helping it to recognize and destroy cancer tumors. Because of its immunity-boosting properties, we are seeing the rise of immunotherapy in cancer treatments in India.
People are opting for a less painful way that makes them capable enough to fight cancer, and with more ease.
There are several types of immunotherapy treatments. Each utilizes different methods to boost the immune system or provides tools for the immune system to target cancer. The following are the types:
Targeted Treatment: Unlike chemotherapy, immunotherapy is designed to boost the immunity of a patient. Its medication travels through the bloodstream, helping to target the cancerous cells directly.
Improved Survival Rates: In November 2022, studies from the National Cancer Institute showed that patients in the immunotherapy groups have shown faster recovery rates when combined with conventional chemotherapy approaches.
Fewer Side Effects: Immunotherapy is an advanced cancer treatment with a gentler impact on the body. Because it is a targeted cancer therapy, it focuses on simulating or directing immune responses instead of destroying all rapidly dividing cells. This results in fewer side effects, such as fatigue, nausea, or hair loss.
Despite its increasing popularity and higher patient recovery rates, patients are facing numerous challenges with immunotherapy cancer treatment in India. Because of its high cost and limited access to specialized centers, it impacts the effectiveness of the therapy and ultimately influences the patient outcomes in a negative way, like delayed treatment and uneven recovery. Addressing these barriers is essential to make immunotherapy more accessible and improve patient recovery rates across the country.
As immunotherapy has its own benefits, it can also be integrated with traditional chemotherapy methods to provide advanced cancer treatment. With India moving forward with its fight against cancer, immunotherapy has been a powerful approach, offering hope beyond conventional treatments. While challenges like high costs and limited availability still exist, the expansion of immunotherapy can drastically improve patient outcomes and shape a new era of cancer care in the country.
