When you are undergoing cancer treatment, everything you hear sounds helpful.

“Take vitamin C.”
“Start turmeric.”
“Drink this, it boosts immunity.”

None of it sounds wrong. But during treatment, your body is not working the way it usually does. And your medicines are doing very specific things. Adding random supplements to that mix can change how those medicines work.

High-dose vitamins can interfere

Vitamins like C, E, and A are usually seen as safe. But in large amounts, they can get in the way of treatment. Some treatments work by damaging cancer cells. High doses of antioxidants may reduce that effect. That’s not what you want right now.

Herbal supplements are not as simple as they seem

Herbs don’t just “sit” in your body. They can affect how medicines are processed. That means your treatment may not work the same way. Or you may notice more side effects. Common ones people take without thinking much:

  • St. John’s Wort

  • Ginseng

  • Turmeric capsules

  • Garlic supplements

These are not always harmful, but they’re not neutral either.

Blood-thinning supplements can cause problems

Treatment can lower your platelets. That already makes bleeding more likely. Some supplements can make this worse. High-dose vitamin E, fish oil, garlic extracts, and ginkgo fall into this category. It’s not something you’ll notice immediately, but it matters.

Hormone-like products need caution

Some supplements act like hormones in the body. If the cancer is hormone-sensitive, this can be a problem. Soy supplements, red clover, and black cohosh are a few examples. These are often taken thinking they’re mild. They’re not always.

You don’t always know what you’re taking

Supplements are not checked as strictly as medicines. What’s written on the label is not always exact. During treatment, even small unknowns can create issues.

What to do instead

Before you start anything, just check once with your doctor. If you’re already taking something, mention it. Don’t assume it’s fine because it’s “natural.” This is not about avoiding everything. It’s about not making things harder for your body while it’s already dealing with treatment.
