Breast cancer treatment can sometimes leave women wondering why their bodies feel so different from before. The weight on the scale starts going up. Energy levels stay low even after a good sleep. Feeling cold becomes more common. Simple tasks feel more tiring than before. While these changes can happen for many reasons, the thyroid is one area doctors sometimes look at when symptoms continue.

The thyroid's job in the body

The thyroid is a small gland in the neck. It produces hormones that help control how the body uses energy. These hormones can affect body temperature, heart rate, digestion, energy level, and weight. If thyroid hormone levels fluctuate, the body may begin to experience symptoms.

Treatment may impact thyroid function

Some breast cancer treatments may alter hormone levels in the body. In some women, radiation can impact the thyroid in the neck region. Some drugs used to treat cancer have also been associated with thyroid changes. Not all patients have thyroid issues, but if they don't get better, doctors think about it.

Why do weight and energy levels change

Weight gain is very common during breast cancer treatment. For some women, fatigue results in reduced physical activity. Hormone therapy may also disrupt the body's natural hormone balance. Change in sleep, appetite, and muscle mass may play a role as well. The combined effect of these factors can sometimes cause the metabolism to slow.

Symptoms that should not be ignored

Persistent tiredness is often blamed on treatment alone. Sometimes there may be another reason. Symptoms that doctors may want to investigate include:

  • Unexplained weight gain

  • Feeling unusually cold

  • Dry skin

  • Constipation

  • Low energy

  • Difficulty concentrating

A simple blood test can help check whether the thyroid is working properly.

If a thyroid problem is found

An underactive thyroid can usually be managed with medication. Many women take thyroid hormone replacement tablets every day. Regular blood tests help doctors monitor hormone levels and adjust treatment if needed.

Taking care of your metabolism

No food or supplement out there can fully stop metabolism changes during breast cancer treatment. But some simple daily habits do help:

  • Eat protein with your meals

  • Move when you can

  • Get enough sleep

  • Show up to your follow-up appointments

Breast cancer treatment can alter the body in a way that you may not expect. If you've been more tired than normal, if your weight has changed, or if you feel different than you normally do, tell someone. It could be related to your treatment. It may also be due to a different cause, such as problems with the thyroid. When something doesn't feel right, tell your provider during your appointment. A conversation and a few tests may be enough to understand what is causing the change.
