During cancer treatment, sometimes food tastes different from what it used to. Everything feels heavy, and the meal is no longer normal. The stomach fills up too easily. Bloating, gas, discomfort, or even nausea may occur after eating. This can be frustrating when those around you constantly tell you, “You need to eat.” The reality is that sometimes the body craves food but has trouble digesting it as it did before, and it happens when digestive enzymes are affected.
The stomach stops feeling comfortable
Digestive enzymes help the body break down food. When those enzymes are lower, food may stay heavy in the stomach. Some foods might be more difficult to chew, or you might notice that oily food causes discomfort. Some feel uneasy after dairy. Others get full after eating a few bites. Sometimes, the body begins to show some symptoms such as:
Bloating after meals
Gas
Stomach cramps
Loose motions
A greasy or oily stool
Nausea after eating
These changes can feel concerning, but they do happen during treatment in some patients.
What usually feels easier
This is often when simple food starts feeling better. Soft rice. Khichdi. Light dal. Oats. Boiled potatoes. Toast. Curd, if it suits the stomach. A warm soup. A banana. Nothing heavy. Just food that feels gentle- that is enough right now. A full plate may feel like too much. A few bites may feel manageable. That still counts.
Foods that may feel harder right now
Some foods may leave the stomach feeling worse.
Things like:
Fried food
Very oily meals
Heavy gravies
Packaged snacks
Very spicy food
Large meat portions
That does not mean these foods are “bad.”
It just means the body may not be ready for them right now.
Listen to your body
Some days, warm food may feel better; some days, soft food may go down easier. Some days, even a few spoonfuls may feel like enough. That is not a weakness. That is the body asking for a different kind of support. When enzyme levels change, eating can start feeling like an effort. And that can be emotionally draining. But right now, the goal is not a perfect meal. The goal is to help the body get nourishment in a way it can handle today. Sometimes that starts with something as simple as a few quiet bites.
