“You look fine now.” People say it without thinking much. They see you and feel relieved, so they say it. For them, it’s simple. For you, it may not be. You listen and wait. You know they didn’t mean anything wrong. Still, it doesn’t feel right. Remembering how it cost you to get here. And you know you are still playing with things they can not see.
What others don’t see
On the surface, it might appear that things are back to normal. You are standing, talking, maybe even smiling. Yet within you may be weary. Even little things can require effort. Certain days might be heavier than others. You have thoughts you do not share. Changes that you are yet to accept.
Why is it so
It can feel like everything you went through is being reduced to your appearance. As though being more attractive means being more perfect. But recovery is not like that. It takes time. It moves slowly. Some days are easier, some days are not.
What can you say
You don’t have to explain this to everyone. If you want, you can say, “I’m better than before, but still recovering.” That is enough. If you don’t feel like saying anything, that's okay too. You can just let it pass.
Give yourself space
Not every comment needs your energy. Give yourself space to feel what you feel. If something bothers you, even a little, it is valid. You don’t have to hide it or push it away. You don’t have to act okay just because others think you are. Looking fine and feeling fine are not the same thing. And you don’t have to rush your healing to match what others see.
